I would suggest you avoid the temptation to make general statements which may not be true. It's the sort of thing naff journalists do, and the BBC, and so on. For example, is it true that all elites threaten the end of the world? Did e.g. Celtic chiefs, or Confucian bureaucrats, or Arabic slave traders, rule by fearful statements about the end of the world? - I doubt it. Similarly, was all the money spent on pina coladas? We're talking here about a high percentage of the entire world's GNP - whole industries, whole armies of men, whole cities, whole propaganda departments, were funded by it, not just a bit of consumption.
The main strength of your piece imho is viewing things from typical politicians' or generals' or arms dealers' viewpoints, where the science isn't understood, but payments, careers, promotion, wars from their viewpoints are. Why spend a fortune to bomb Hiroshima, when it was much cheaper to firebomb? - that's a convincing argument.
