JONATHAN GATHORNE-HARDY: THE RISE AND FALL OF THE BRITISH NANNY (published 1972)

- See also my notes on Jonathan Gathorne-Hardy on the story of British (or English) 'public schools'. The author seems to have looked into social history, but not as a vehicle for Jewish obsessions. RW 21 nov 2021

Interesting look at cruelty, class, upper class-ish families hoping for other families to fail so they can get nannies (cf Jane Eyre, I think), psychoanalysis which Gathorne-Hardy thinks necessary - he looked at people like Churchill etc, and interviewed as many nannies as he could and their victims; I think about 90 all told.
Some rather unpleasant stories, e.g. of child told his or her parents were off to India for five years or something, and who preferred to go out rather than speak to them before leaving them behind; and about Compton Mackenzie and his nanny - the author maintains these people could never admit to themselves that their nannies hated them and were only doing it for the job. And that e.g. otherwise formidable elderly people still quailed before their nannies. Also the nannies made up manners which they imagined were upper class - e.g. making the kids sit at table with one or both hands with palm flat on the table.
