Heads of Science
All Hertfordshire Secondary Schools

Dear Head of Science,

I am undertaking a research project on the teaching of HIV/AIDS. The objective is to identify the range of approaches used and the extent to which programmes deal with knowledge and values. The scope of the project is limited to HIV/AIDS delivery through Science and PSE programmes, though it is appreciated that many schools will deliver health education through a variety of other subject areas too and may have networks of provision spanning different subjects and years to provide an integrated comprehensive and coherent programme over-all. The need to restrict input to these two curricular elements is therefore regretted.

The research arose from a Health Education Project funded by Herts LEA two years ago. Some teachers involved in TVEI may remember a conference at Offley, organised by Stuart Ware, David Andrews, Jan Campbell and me, to disseminate the results. I shall use the results of the current survey for my dissertation for a Masters degree at Brunel University. The outcomes will also be used to inform the development of a college policy on health education and to improve progression in health education programmes for students coming from school to college at 16+.

Your help would be greatly appreciated. I attach two identical copies of a questionnaire. One should be completed by the member of the Science staff most directly involved in delivering HIV/AIDS education (e.g. through biological aspects of the National Curriculum). The other should be completed by a member of the PSE delivery team, who has a significant input on health topics. Where many staff are involved in PSE programmes, any one person may complete the questionnaire.

I shall be most grateful if you will arrange for both completed questionnaires to be returned to me, by 31st May 1993. I enclose two stamped self addressed envelopes for this purpose. Your responses will be treated in strict confidence. If you would like further information about this research, I shall be happy to discuss it with you or your colleagues.

Yours faithfully,

Sue Warman
